From battle to cattle: Everything I read in February

Posted on March 1, 2026March 1, 2026 by hailey.schopper

Hey everyone!

Today I wanted to do a February wrap up to talk about the three books I read. Plus a sneak peek into a fourth because I was 70% through it on the last day of the month. Despite being on break from school for a week, the number of books I read didn’t increase, but that’s only because two of them were longer than my usual reads.

I read about 1,868 pages in the month of February spanning over four books, one of which I didn’t finish until March. The first two books I read were fantasy romance and the second two were contemporary romance.

Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros

4.5 stars

After making it through her first year at Basgiath War College, things only get more complicated in her second year. Training gets more brutal and Violet knows the secrets leadership are keeping. She knows she has to push herself towards what’s right by training hard without letting leadership catch on.

I am so grateful that I was able to pick this up immediately after Fourth Wing because I needed to know more. I don’t normally read books with such explicit violence, so there were parts of this book that were hard to read. With that being said, I still really enjoyed the novel. Found family is hands down on of the best tropes, so I loved getting to see Violet’s relationships grow. I didn’t love all the jealousy happening in this book because it felt very juvenile for characters that are 21+ years old trying to save the world.

Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

4.5 stars

I was shocked by the end of Iron Flame, so once again I was grateful I could immediately pick up Onyx Storm. The battle has now begun and things are amping up for everyone. Violet must leave the safety of the wards to seek allies for a battle that seems impossible to win. On top of that, Violet is now keeping secrets of her own, but she’s simply trying to protect those she loves.

I enjoyed that the pacing picked up in this book and that the world expanded beyond Basgiath. Getting to learn about a bunch of different places in the world was something I really enjoyed because it helped flesh the setting out. I am really looking forward to the fourth book in this series, I just hope I can remember all the little things when the time comes!

Dust Storm by Maggie C. Gates

4 stars

After some intense fantasy, I was happy to return to some small town, cowboy romance. This book is the first in the Griffith Brothers series—an interconnected stand-alone series. We follow Christian Griffith, single dad rancher, and Cassandra Parker, New York city girl, as they work towards developing big plans to help the ranch financially. Things keep going wrong from the engagement ring on Cassandra’s finger to the fact she has to live with Christian and his daughters when the bunk house is out of order.

I saw this book in Indigo a few months ago and finally decided to pick it up. I figured it would be a good palate cleanser and I was definitely right. At first, I struggled with Cassandra’s character, but as the book went on I started to love her and all her prickliness. I find in many single parent romances the kid(s) are quite young, so it was refreshing to read about a pre-teen and a teen.

Downpour by Maggie C. Gates

Downpour is book two in the Griffiths Brothers series, so I was excited to jump right in. I read about 70% of this book in February and really enjoyed it. That’s all I’ll say for now, you’ll have to read my March wrap-up at the end of the month for more.
